Frequently Asked Questions
What is Classical Deism?
Classical Deism is an umbrella term used to denote Deists who share similarity in belief with historic Deists of the past. We believe in rigorous philosophical examination of all claims and ideas. As such, we are not a spiritual movement but rather a group of philosophically-inclined people.
How is Classical Deism different from Theism?
While we are in agreement with Theists on the existence of God, there are some key differences. We do not believe miracles, divine interventions, and supernatural events can be proven. We reject the methodology of revealed religions which necessarily rely on faith. Deists accept reason as the primary source of metaphysical knowledge as opposed to authoritative texts or dubious historical records.
Aren't you just Atheists?
This question is asked quite often by both Atheists and Theists who believe in a strict dichotomy between Atheism and Theism. Since we aren't part of any major religions, we must be Atheists. That is certainly not the case. Deism is not an amalgamation of what we like from Atheism or Theism, but rather is it's own standalone worldview. We reject Theism because we find that they rely on several false or unprovable metaphysical claims and we reject Atheism because we find God to be a necessary being for the universe to exist.
What is an example of "Non-Classical" Deism?
Not all worldviews or belief systems are the same. It behooves an intellectually curious and rigorous person to have proper justification for their beliefs. As such, we do not view ourselves as similar to certain other Deists. An example of Non-Classical Deism is Spiritual Deism. We do not agree with them because they often transpose their own personal experiences and preconceptions into Deism. This leads to unjustifiable contradictions and we do not consider them as part of our intellectual movement.
Is Classical Deism a religion?
It depends on how one defines religions. We do believe in God, however we do not believe in dogmatic authority nor share many other key features of other major religions. The answer could be yes, but most of us would prefer to call it a philosophical position instead.
Do Classical Deists still exist?
